A nation in mourning. A city recovering. A unique moment in history when people came together to rebuild hope.
Three weeks after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, when the world was afraid to get on an airplane much less a plane to New York City, 1,000 Oregonians took 62 flights to show the terrorists they didn’t win and to boost the tanking New York economy. What they found were fellow Americans who needed more than their money, they needed their hearts. The Flight for Freedom is a little-known story of Americans at their best, showing up for their fellow Americans in a time of tragedy.
In 2003, wrote and published this book about the Flight For Freedom, a remarkable trip to New York City taken by 1,000 Oregonians one month after 9/11. The book is based on on interviews with the participants and includes photographs taken by them as well.
You can learn more about this trip by reading the "Pacific Northwest Delivers Patrons and a Pick-Me-Up," an article I wrote for The Boston Globe about the trip. You will find this story on the Features page.
