Oregon Loves New York: A Story of American Unity After 9/11, which can be found in the collections of the Library of Congress and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.

Oregon Loves New York documents a key event in American history that I covered as a reporter. It’s a true-life story of coming together that our country particularly needs now.

Three weeks after the 9/11 attacks, when the world was afraid to get on a plane much less fly to New York, 1,000 courageous Oregonians did just that. It was called the Flight for Freedom.

They came together across politics, religion and race to fly to New York to show Americans not live in fear and to show that they cared for their fellow Americans — people 3,000 miles away that they didn’t know.

Former New York Governor George Pataki states that the Oregonians were as important in helping New York recover as President George Bush throwing out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium. You can see an excerpt of my interview with Gov. Pataki in this film clip.

As senior editor for the permanent collections at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., I oversaw the first new museum guidebook in more than 20 years. In addition, I was the first editor for internal communications at the University of Virginia Health System and magazine editor for the University of Virginia Graduate School and College of Arts & Sciences Communications. As writer-editor at the Farm Credit Administration, where I wrote the World War II film about soldiers’ letters home called Letters from earned approximately 300 times the YouTube views of the agency's previously most popular video.

My work has appeared in newspapers including The Oregonian, The Denver Post and the Dallas Morning News, and such magazines as Chicago and Newsweek. Icovered the Flight for Freedom for The Boston Globeand the Chicago Tribune.

I also contributed more than 1,200 artist biographies and object descriptions to the J. Paul Getty Museum website.

I hold a master’s degree in art history and museum studies from the University of Southern California. I received her bachelor’s degree from Vassar College, where I was a double major in political science and art history.
